The GM Guide
To ensure the delivery of an excellent gaming experience to its members and guests, the Role Play Haven maintains a Games Masters (GM) Guide, outlining good practice and expected behaviour for its GMs.
The below are marked as Rules and other as a Guides; Guides can be overturned by the branch Games Coordinator or Branch Manager, as sometimes the rules don't always work in every situation.
Rules
- GMs must aim to adjudicate their game fairly. They should remember that all members are here to have fun.
- GMs must check all their players are booked into their game and that the website is up to date with the correct game details.
- If you can't attend any session, you must let the Games Coordinator and your players know in advance of the session. RP Haven will also inform everyone via The Games Update, which is emailed and broadcasted on social media on the day of the club night.
- GM must tidy up after them self. This includes: putting your table and chairs back at the end of your session, removing rubbish and taking glasses back to the bar.
- A GM must aim to give a quality gaming experience to up to 6 players maximum at a table. Contact the Games Coordinator if you wish to exceed this amount.
- Players are expected to play for a whole quarter but they have the right to leave your game at any time without reverberation. Likewise GMs also have the right to remove players. If you feel unsure or need guidance on player management then our Member Reps are available to be consulted especially if you feel this could cause repercussions.
- GMs must have a valid membership.
- GMs are classed as volunteers and are rewarded by not paying for the game they run.
- Players who are booked into your game from the website has priority over non booked members.
- GMs must aim to attend at least 90% of their games during one-quarter (10 out of 12 sessions or 5 out of 6 sessions for half quarters). Please consult the Games Coordinator if you are unable to attend anything less.
Guide
- New GMs to the club will be assigned a GM mentor. The mentor is not there to control your game or players, and only provides advice to you at the end of the game session. (For more information on this, please speak to your Games Coordinator).
- Manage your table's noise level with respect to other tables. Occasional outbursts and dramatic noise are fine, but remember it's a shared space. GMs must not play Music and devices that create sound effects without the permission of the Games Coordinator.
- GMs should communicate well with their players. We suggest setting up a Facebook page or email chain to communicate. The members facebook group is also available should you not wish to set up a separate page. click here to join.
- A GM must aim to give a quality gaming experience to up to 6 players maximum at a table. Contact the Games Coordinator if you wish to exceed this amount.
This GM Guide was a joint project with Lewisham and Stratford Branch to revise the old version, based upon members feedback. Special thanks to Philip Wright who helped as an independent member. This is version 2.0
