This is a continuing campaign set in the Eriador region of Tolkien's Middle-Earth, the lands west of the Misty Mountains, which include The Shire, Rivendell, Bree, and the forgotten realm of Angmar. 

Sauron has returned to Mordor and openly declared himself, and the Wise are enlisting those among the Free Peoples who are willing to pit what Strength and Heart and Wits they have against the Shadow. 

The Company of adventurers has uncovered the existence of a new type of troll, the Olog-hai, who are intelligent, can walk openly in daylight, and serve Sauron directly. They also discovered a colony of outcast dwarves slaughtered by a tribe of orcs from the faraway Ettenmoors. The orcs are now in possession of a key to a secret entrance to Moria. 

In the meantime, the Company has sailed to the ruined port city of Lond Daer and are travelling upriver back to Tharbad to pick up the trail of a mysterious stranger who had travelled with the now-slaughtered dwarves.
