Become a Volunteer

The Role Play Haven is run by a dedicated team of volunteers, who donate their time to fun, safe gaming. We couldn’t do what we do, without them. From running branches, helping at conventions, and creating some of our amazing game sessions; our volunteers are vital and they mean the world to us. They help us combine our favourite hobby with raising money for charities close to our hearts.

Our volunteers bring their skills and passion to The Role Play Haven through our Branch Committees (who run the local branches and organise amazing gaming) and our HQ volunteers (who support our branches)

Do you wish to lead your branch and help shape its future? Standing as a volunteer committee and making key decisions on how the branch is operated?

Do you feel passionate about gaming and charity? Well, there’s no better way to get involved than by volunteering. You’ll gain valuable skills that can carry through to your day to day job – and it’s a great way to get more involved with your branch and the Role Play Haven!

James Desmond

Compliance Officer

James started gaming at ten and continued until he was 22, though moving to an area without a club or gaming friends, this stopped until he returned to London and found the RP Haven in 2012, originally only located in Lewisham.

In the following year he became the club secretary, managing the meetings, writing minutes, being the POC for the club for outside organization and inquiries. During his tenure he also created and formalized many of the club’s documentation, such as, the Code of conduct, Terms of reference of each job, the Complaints procedure. This led on to him becoming the Chairman of the Lewisham club and also prepared the way for turning the club into professional entity as a Community Interest Company (CIC), with expansion to a foundation of a second club in Strafford. Staying as a Director of the CIC until 2017 whereby he had to step down due to family reasons.
However, he has continued to help out in the background until 2021, returning as a volunteer leader for compliance.

He has been an active GM since 2013 for many games within the club. He also ran a Star Wars non-contact LARP for 3 years.
Reviews by payers of his games:

“It was alright”

“How did you get in my house?”

Regional Manager for London

Federica is a contract manager for a student travel tour operator, and, of course, a travel addict; Facebook tells her she has visited 45 countries so far, and hopefully many more will come soon! Originally from Italy, she made London her home in 2010.

A gamer in her free time, during her years of volunteering for the RP Haven, she has covered all the committee positions ( Member Rep in Stratford, Games Coordinator first and then Branch Manager in Archway).

Since 2019 she took a step back and is now just a general volunteer, whilst looking after Lorenzo, the youngest RPH volunteer ツ

Ben Knox

Communications Officer

Ben started volunteering as the Communications Officer with the Role Play Haven in 2018, soon after which he joined as a member and attended the Archway branch to figure out what on earth he had gotten himself into. Translating the thoughts and writings of the directors into updates for our members, Ben ensures upcoming events and important updates are available for all those interested. At the table he enjoys games such as the nitty gritty of Pathfinder and the post-apocalyptic landscapes of Symbaroum.

Outside of the Role Play Haven Ben is studying to become an Objects Conservator, hoping to specialise in books and paper. Hailing from New Zealand, with a background in archaeology and insurance, he hopes to stay in London long term and continue to live on the door step of the amazing history of the UK and Europe.

Ben works as a Special Needs Coordinator where he also runs a role- play club for pupils and teaches children how to play and DM 5th Ed D&D. Has been an volunteer at RP Haven Lewisham Branch for over ten years, he has been Branch Manager, Games Coordinator. Ben has been instrumental in supporting the Lewisham club during its recent hiatus and change of venues. He has also been working on RP Haven projects such as Young Dragons – a project for the future!

A veteran of the first wave of D&D, Ben currently GMs The One Ring, Call of Cthulhu. He has represented the RP Haven as a GM at UK Games Expo and Dragon meet.

Not quite a perpetual GM – he has enjoyed playing Dark Heresy, Nights Black Agents. The list of games to run gets ever bigger – Pendragon and Alien the most recent on the must play list. As a player he got to the finals of Cthulhu Masters but then lost is sanity as he failed to win.

He grew up in rural Essex and moved to South East London as an adult. Ben’s past life includes playing drums in bands, attending Chelsea College of Art to study painting, he is married with three kids, two dogs and a cat and way too many Orks miniatures than is healthy.

I'm a non-binary infrastructure engineer working for IBM. Anything to do with servers, I'm the person to ask ツ I've been playing and GMing at RPHaven for a few years, and recently made the jump to volunteering in order to help with the website transition. Branch Support

Harry is a canny Scot hailing from the lands north of the wall. He has lived in many countries around the world and moved to London in 2015, joining the Role Play Haven in February that year after a long hiatus from playing TTRPGs. During his time with the RPH he has seen it grow from a single branch to the organisation it is today and has been a volunteer in both the Lewisham and Stratford branches as a member representative.

Although an English teacher, in his spare time Harry can be found wrestling were-bears in haunted forests , battling against crazed cultists in the thrall of alien gods, looking for pirate treasure in the Caribbean, flying through the air in a spandex costume while shooting energy bolts at supervillains and countless other heroic endeavours.
